Things are always changing in the field of nutrition. With more advanced testing, research studies and new methods of growing and preparing food, there is an almost constant flow of information on nutrition and its effects on our health and well-being. What is nutrigenomics and how does it impact us?

What Is Nutrigenomics

Nutrigenomics is the scientific research about how environmental factors, such as food intake and lifestyle, influence gene expression. This specific research began gaining popularity after 2003, when the Human Genome Project opened the door to scientific research on the links between gene expression and the environment.

Nutrigenomics is helping us understand how individual interactions with food affects gene expression. Gene expression, per Wikipedia, is the physiological process by which information from a gene is used in the synthesis of a functional gene product. While all human genes are the same, how those genes are expressed (variants) is what makes us who we are – eye color, hair color, muscular structure, etc. The study of this interaction between body and environment has led to increased personalization of diet and nutrition programs. Every body is different therefore every body’s genetic processes and interactions with food are different. Each individual body responds to different diets in different ways – weight loss and gain, metabolism, food intolerances, etc.

Many diseases are weight-based: diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, cholesterol, etc. Nutrigenomics addresses issues such as:
