When Good Foods Are Bad

There is so much information on the internet about food – good diets, bad diets, fad diets, miracle diets – and it seems like every few years everything we’ve learned about different foods gets reversed. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about…”Grapefruit is the perfect diet food – it burns more calories digesting it than are in the fruit itself! So eat grapefruits, lots and lots of grapefruits!!” then becomes “ Stay away from grapefruit diets! Too much sugar, you’ll just undo your progress!” Frustrating.

When Good Foods Are Bad

So what are some “healthy food” should be avoided when getting and staying fit?

You take the time and the care to buy your vegetables, maybe even organic only, and decide your dinner will be a big, uber-healthy salad. You wash and chop tomatoes, carrots, onions, kale, spinach leaves, etc. Maybe you add mushrooms or red grapes or granola for extra taste. And then, the last step, you add the Zesty Italian salad dressing….and undo everything you tried to do by choosing a healthy salad instead of a hamburger.

Let’s look at 10 so-called healthy foods that aren’t exactly what they’re cracked up to be. Some of these “DON’T foods” may surprise you!

Microwave Popcorn

1Microwave is greasy, buttery, salty but actually, the biggest issue with microwave popcorn is with the bag. The microwaveable bags that come with popcorn are coated with non-stick perfluorochemicals such as   2 sulfonate (PFOS) and 3perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Another unhealthy ingredient is diacetyl. 4Diacetyl is the fake butter flavoring compound. This substance can actually cause serious lung disease when inhaled in large quantities and has been linked to Alzheimer’s.
Better Option: make your own popcorn. Use organic, plain kernels with coconut oil or some type of organic butter. Some topping suggestions:
Nutritional Yeast
Garlic Powder
Cayenne Pepper

Shrimp

Shrimp has some really questionable ingredients, such as food additives and chemicals. 5Shrimp that comes from shrimp farm pond waters are often treated with neurotoxic organophosphate pesticides to kill fungus on shrimp eggs. Many of these pesticides have been linked with ADHA symptoms, memory loss and tremors. Once these pesticides have been used their by-products can stay in the shrimp for more than 200 days in 50F degree water.

Farmed Fish

6So you feel you’re making a healthy choice with Atlantic Salmon, but you’re not. “Atlantic” is actually a code word for “farmed.” Studies have shown that farmed salmon is strongly linked to dioxin, a cancer-causing agent. Levels of dioxin are 11 times higher in farmed salmon than in wild salmon. Stay away from any salmon ladled “Atlantic.” Another surprising fact is that eating tilapia is actually WORSE than eating bacon.
Better Option: Alaskan wild-caught salmon, Pacific sardines, Atlantic mackerel.

Soy Protein

We’ve all heard about how healthy soy protein is. What a lot of people don’t know is there’s a difference between “unfermented” soy and “fermented” soy. 7Fermented soy is actually ok, unfermented soy is not. Unfermented soy is found in soy protein, edamame and soy milk. Here we find the link to weedkiller. Most US soy is genetically modified to withstand applications of glyphosate. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup, a weedkiller that’s been on the market for many years. Glyphosate has been linked to human cell death.
Better Option: choose coconut amines in place of soy sauce. Good sources for fermented soy are natto, tempeh and real miso soup.

Inorganic Strawberries

8Many inorganic strawberries have been exposed to pesticides. These pesticides are linked to cancer and reproductive damage. An especially worrisome fact is the fields used to grow strawberries are often prepped before planting by using poisonous gases originally developed for CHEMICAL WARFARE.
Better Option: organic strawberries

Canned Green Beans

9“Canned green beans are consistently contaminated with some of the most dangerous pesticides, according to Consumer Reports. In fact, eating just one serving of U.S.-grown green beans a day is “high risk,” due to the toxicity of the pesticides typically used on that crop. Because those chemicals tend to be far more toxic than others, Consumer Reports notes that eating one serving of green beans from the U.S. is 200 times riskier than eating a serving of U.S.-grown broccoli.”

Another dangerous ingredient in canned green beans is bisphenol A. 10Bisphenol A (BPA) is a synthetic estrogen and some toxic effects linked to BPA are male and female infertility, hormone imbalance, breast cancer, prostate cancer, etc.
Better Options: organic, fresh green beans (or frozen), home-grown green beans.

Reduced-fat Peanut Butter

11Peanuts are naturally high in fat. When this fat is removed, other ingredients are added in to compensate, such as sugar and sodium.
Better Options: single portions of the full-fat peanut butter,

Turkey Burgers

12Just like beef burgers, turkey burgers can contain both dark and light meat. Dark and light meat are high in saturated fats – maybe even MORE than is in lean ground beef.
Better Options: make your burgers with 93% lean beef.

Frozen Diet Meals

13Don’t let those tiny portions fool you – these meals can contain artificial ingredients and sodium.
Better Options: cook wholesome meals and freeze them.

Fruit-Flavored Yogurt

14Another surprising culprit is fruit-flavored yogurt. These are full of sugar.
Better Options: plain yogurt with whole fruit added

These are only a few of the healthy foods that are actually NOT healthy. It’s important not only to know what is in your food, but to know the details about each ingredient that you need in order to make wise diet choices!
